FC Utrecht leads the way with unique pitch management system

Fossil fuel consumption reduced by 67%

It is January, and the pitch at Stadion Galgenwaard is in excellent condition. This is the result of the hard work of the FC Utrecht grounds team, the selection of the right turf, and an innovative pitch management system. Through this approach, the club has reduced its fossil fuel consumption by 67% and decreased its water usage by 50%.

For many football clubs, the pitch is a persistent challenge. How do you ensure the “hallowed turf” remains top quality during the months of December, January, and February? And, ideally, how do you achieve this as sustainably as possible?

Over the past 18 months, FC Utrecht has invested significantly in the pitch. The grounds team works day and night to maintain the conditions for the players as optimal as possible. This is done with the help of a unique pitch management system that FC Utrecht started using this year.

In collaboration with DrainTalent and HeatTalent, the club opted for a unique pitch management system alongside the introduction of pioneering electric pitch heating technology. While it may sound complex, it simply means that FC Utrecht has adopted a much greener way of working. The result: a 67% reduction in fossil fuel usage and a 50% reduction in water used for irrigation and sprinkling.

By successfully completing this project, FC Utrecht has achieved more than just energy savings. The club now serves as a prime example and proof of concept for many national and international football clubs. Furthermore, this technology is applicable to other sectors, such as floor heating for greenhouse horticulture and point heating for railway networks.

This FC Utrecht project was co-funded by the European Union.
